September/October 2017 Issue

Issue 6, 2017

Letter from President, Igna Van den Veyver, MD

Dear colleagues and friends of ISPD,

Your Society is excited to bring you the latest issue of Global Updates. I hope you will enjoy reading about our education fund, an update from the Reproductive Screening Special Interest Group, and the news about our 22nd International Conference on Prenatal Diagnosis and Therapy in July 2018 in the city of Antwerp in Belgium.  The Program Committee is hard at work to bring you innovative and educational content, and the venue and city are beautiful and will be well worth the travel. I hope you will mark your calendars now and watch your e-mail or favorite social media for regular updated information and plan to join us next summer. In the coming months, we will be sending updates about the planned preconference courses, invited speakers, other events, and networking opportunities. We also encourage you to begin thinking about abstracts you will submit. The contributions from submitted abstracts are always what makes the conference the most exciting.

Best wishes,

Igna

ISPD Education Fund

ISPD is extremely excited to announce that it will be launching the ISPD Education Fund at the end of the year to support online education efforts in the fields of prenatal diagnosis and therapy. The ISPD Education Fund will allow ISPD to create and provide online educational content for a wide professional audience, including junior and low-and-middle-income country researchers and clinicians. It is the intent and ultimate goal to create a sustainable model for regularly updated and high-quality online educational content over the long term. We will be soliciting funding from both corporate entities and individuals and hope you will consider contributing to the fund as a part of your end-of-year giving. Stay tuned for further details!

Reproductive Screening SIG Update

Liona Poon, Reproductive Screening SIG Co-Chair

This year we have seen the publication of one of the most important studies in relation to screening and prevention of preeclampsia.
Preeclampsia is an important cause of maternal and perinatal mortality and morbidity. There is extensive evidence that the risk of adverse outcome in relation to preeclampsia is much higher when the disease is severe and of early onset requiring delivery before 37 weeks’ gestation (preterm preeclampsia), than at term. A major challenge in modern obstetrics is early identification of pregnancies at high-risk of preeclampsia and undertaking the necessary measures to improve placentation and reduce the prevalence of the disease.
